This is a wonderful collection of nine vintage blown-glass Christmas ornaments with deep indented reflector designs, including several large examples. The group is a mixture of Czechoslovakian and American-made ornaments, with some of the metal caps marked “Czechoslovakia” and three marked U. That were made by Corning Glass between 1939 and 1942. Aside from the three early Corning ornaments, another standout piece is the large elongated teardrop-shaped ornament measuring approximately 4 1/2 inches in height. It has a silvered body decorated with broad green bands, yellow striping and white painted details, with three indented reflectors positioned around the body and a small green glass ball forming the lower finial. The remaining ornaments are primarily round or slightly elongated forms with deeply moulded reflector centres. Several have flower-like indents highlighted in pink, yellow, green and silver. The group includes a striking blue ornament with pink decoration and a large silver reflector, as well as a bright pink example with a multicoloured floral indent. There is considerable variety in the shapes and construction of the reflectors, ranging from relatively simple flower forms to elaborate deeply recessed designs. Based on their construction, decoration and marked caps, the ornaments appear to date primarily to the 1940s-1950s. They have been assembled together over time and are not an original matched factory set. Largest three-sided indent teardrop ornament: 4 1/2 inches high. Two next-largest ornaments: 3 3/4 inches high. Blue and pink ornament: 3 inches high. Three Corning Glass silver reflector ornaments: 2 3/4 inches high U. Two remaining ornaments: approximately 2 5/8 inches high. All nine ornaments are in very good condition with no breaks or cracks. There is expected age-related wear to the silvering, painted decoration and finishes, including areas of oxidation, fading and surface loss. The metal caps also show age and oxidation. This is an appealing group of large vintage indent and reflector Christmas ornaments, with a great mixture of shapes, colours and reflector designs – the three Corning ornaments are very collectible, but all are wonderful decorations for a vintage Christmas tree!
