This large antique mold blown glass clip on bird Christmas ornament is from Germany. It’s either a cockatoo or the smaller cockatiel, measuring 5-3/4 inches without the tail, which brings the total length from topknot to tail tip to 8 inches. Made of unsilvered clear glass, it’s painted in opaque creamy flat white, blue, and pink with black eyes and beak. The molding of the glass is very detailed and realistic. It dates to the late Victorian or Turn of the Century era and has what I presume to be a spun glass tail. The fine hair-like fibers feel a little different than those found on later spun glass tails. The painted finish has darkened with age but it doesn’t have any flaking or much wear. The old tin clip and coiled spring legs have some light rust. The tail has a few loose fibers, but at some point someone glued it in place where it enters the pike. There is a chip to the pike edge, shown in the last photo. The large size, realistic appearance, and good condition make the bird an excellent addition to any antique ornament collection. This large antique mold blown glass clip on bird Christmas ornament is from Germany. It’s either a cockatoo or the smaller cockatiel, measuring a full 6 inches without the tail, which brings the total length from topknot to tail tip to just over 8 inches. Made of unsilvered clear glass, it’s painted in opaque blue, pink, yellow, and white flat colors with black eyes. The molding of the glass is very detailed and realistic. It dates to the late Victorian or Turn of the Century era and has what I presume to be a spun glass tail. The fibers are a little stiffer than those found on later spun glass tails – these are almost like horsehair. The painted finish has expected wear, especially at the beak where most of the paint is entirely gone. The old tin clip and coiled spring legs have some light rust. A small section of the spun glass tail has several loose fibers. Note the bird’s eyes – the left is solid black, but the right has fortuitous wear creating a more realistic bird’s eye. The large size, realistic appearance, and good condition make the bird an excellent addition to any antique ornament collection.
