12 Corning Glass Christmas Tree Ornaments. Made between 1935 – 1939. Six Painted Glass Bulbs. Rare Hard to Find Vintage Ornaments. These ornaments were made just before the start of World War II. T he Steuben design staff submitted several fanciful designs with a strong symbolism of America & Patriotism. A dozen of these designs were chosen for production classified as “Molded Fancies”. There were several different shapes, several bells, an ornament with embossed swirls between. Rows of tiny embossed dots, several lantern buoy shapes. These are some of those first chosen fancy designs. They were made in 2.75″ tall and 3.25″ tall. Each lantern buoy design was made in 2 sizes 2.75″ and 3.25 ” tall both sizes are included in this special box. Pictures and measurements can be added on request. I wanted to take the opportunity to share a brief history of my favorite ornament making company! Pictured is a group of 12 American Corning Glass Ornaments… Max Eckardt (an importer of German ornaments since 1907) knew the coming war would change the ornament market as it had been known. With his foresight and the help of Bill Thompson of the F. They were able to propel Corning Glass ahead in its venture to use its “ribbon” glassblowing machine that had produced a tremendous volume of electric light bulbs into production of beautiful glass ornaments for the American market. The Steuben design staff submitted several fanciful designs with a strong symbolism of America & Patriotism… From which a dozen were chosen for production… A full figured Santa and a Teddy Bear, spheres with impressed tiny diamonds, nubby pine cones and an arrowhead (treetop) like shape, several bells, an ornament with embossed swirls between rows of tiny embossed dots…. These are some of those first chosen fancy designs. Each was made in 2 sizes…. And the first colors used included a gorgeous rich shade of RED, BLUE, GREEN, GOLD and SILVER. NOTE: The Santa & Teddy were only produced for a very short time due to their high production cost. Also more rare and collectible are the WW2 unsilvered examples. To me these earliest Corning fanciful designs are some of the most striking ornaments ever made… And because most of these experimental designs were made for a very short period… They are rare and difficult to find… Especially in nice condition. Included here are EIGHT RARE Art Deco designed Lanterns with industrial influence!! (packed in a WW2 Shiny Brite box) A tree decorated with these beautiful rich colors and unique designs… Of course 100’s of thousands of plain round balls were also made in Corning’s rich colors. And shortly after, two thirds of Corning’s production… We associate these prettily painted (Corning produced) ornaments with the US companies who decorated, boxed and marketed them… Such as Marks Bros, K&W Glass, US Glass Manufacturing Co, Shiny Brite, etc. The shapes and colors used by these companies were different from those decorated by Corning. Corning actually produced ornaments in over 180 different sizes, styles and colors and during the war years had 100% of the American domestic market according to Robert Brenner in his wonderful book, “Christmas Through the Decades”.
