This is a fabulous and very hard to find collection of WWII (1940’s) vintage USA glass unsilvered glass Christmas ornaments, in red, clear and blue glass with silver tinsel. This is a great addition to any collection! Metallic mercury glass ornaments get their shine from being coated on their interior with a silver nitrate solution. In 1940, WWII wartime shortages restricted this material, and ornaments during this time frame were produced without silvering. Since unsilvered ornaments were less popular than the shiny mercury glass, they are harder to find and thus more collectible. This collection has been in our family since new and stored annually in this vintage Purina egg carton.

All of these unsilvered American made glass Christmas ornaments were produced during World War II. From 1942 through 1945, all metals including silvering agents were needed for the war effort, so ornament manufacturers switched to using painted, sprayed, and flashed-on decoration rather than silver nitrate. The round ornaments range from 2 to 3 inches diameter. Most have painted rings or stripes, one has odd squiggles of black glitter (perhaps an at-home art project), another has bright yellow and white mica glitter. Two of the larger ornaments have their original paper caps. The red bell ornament was made by Premier. There are actually two red bells, but the one on the right in the last photo has a break at the bottom. I decided to include it to make an even dozen. The other non-round ornament is a Shiny Brite UFO type tornado shape. The ornaments are in quite good condition considering that unsilvered ornaments were prone to flaking and scratching easily. There is of course some mild wear consistent with age, mostly to the mica glitter. There is no box. See my other listings for hundreds of antique and vintage Christmas items. Each angel is different and all but one have a sticker on the back that says Western Germany. They are from the 1940s. The wings are spun glass. They look like they were not really used. The pictures show one end of the box lid with the label. The other end of the box lid is torn off but it is in the box. I do not know the history of this item. Thank you and have a great day.
